The Ministry of Health has issued an urgent call for road safety during the end-of-year celebrations, highlighting increased emergencies that put additional pressure on already saturated health services. The ministry emphasized the importance of preventive measures, especially avoiding driving under the influence of alcohol.
The statement also addressed political responsibilities affecting healthcare. It criticized certain lawmakers for demanding a right to respond while failing to address urgent legislative matters. The ministry specifically mentioned Deputy Alejandro Pacheco, noting: “While it is true that he did not break quorum, neither he nor his faction showed the political will or disposition to even sit down with a short agenda to vote on a project presented by their own caucus, which is key to strengthening the health system.”
According to the ministry, this initiative would help bring in more medical specialists, reduce waiting lists, and ensure timely care for citizens. The project has faced over two years of delays due to numerous postponement motions and was blocked again when it was ready for a vote.
The ministry stated: “These facts clearly show who is not defending the public or the fundamental right to health. Costa Rica cannot continue paying the price for political decisions that prioritize partisan interests over urgent population needs.”
In closing, the Ministry expressed gratitude toward public security personnel, police forces, Red Cross workers, healthcare and social assistance staff, firefighters, and all officials working through the holidays: “Thank you for your commitment because while many people enjoy well-deserved vacations with family and friends, you continue working tirelessly to protect and safeguard our country’s safety and health.”
