The Ministry of Health has confirmed an imported case of measles in Pérez Zeledón. In response, the national epidemiological surveillance protocol was activated to prevent further spread of the disease.

Authorities have noted a significant rise in measles cases across the Americas, with a 2500% increase reported between 2024 and 2025. This surge has prompted heightened alert among health officials.

Measles is described as highly contagious and can be transmitted through respiratory droplets when speaking, coughing, or sneezing. The disease can lead to severe complications such as pneumonia, blindness, or brain inflammation.

People planning to travel to the FIFA World Cup 2026 or to countries where there are active measles cases are advised to check and update their vaccination status at least two weeks before departure.

Starting Tuesday, February 17, the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS) will provide measles vaccinations for individuals aged 20 to 39 who are traveling to high-risk destinations.
