Motagua’s goalkeeper Luis Ortiz has responded to controversy after comments he made following his team’s 1-0 win over Liga Deportiva Alajuelense in the first leg of the Concacaf Central American Cup quarterfinals. The remarks, which were captured on video and shared widely, led Motagua to issue a statement on its social media channels to clarify Ortiz’s intentions.
In statements released by Motagua, Ortiz addressed the situation: “I have never mocked any rival, Alajuelense has all my respect, it has been Central American champion multiple times, it is an exemplary institution that should be a model to follow.”
Ortiz explained that his comments had been taken out of context. He said he was responding to a question from a private security guard regarding his impressions of playing at Saprissa Stadium versus Morera Soto Stadium. According to Ortiz, “The gentleman asked me about my point of view regarding what the Saprissa stadium and Morera Soto transmit. I told him that I was more impressed playing against the ‘morados’, that I felt more pressure.”
He continued: “It is my appreciation and not disrespect. If they felt offended I apologize, but it was never my intention. I reiterate that Alajuela has all my respect.”
After Motagua’s victory at Alejandro Morera Soto Stadium, Ortiz was overheard telling a security officer: “They (Alajuelense) are not Saprissa, nobody puts pressure,” not realizing members of the press could hear and record him nearby. Ortiz maintains his words were misunderstood and meant no offense.
Alajuelense is set to travel to Honduras for the decisive second leg against Motagua at Estadio Chelato Uclés.
