Municipal inaction affects over 150,000 residents in Puntarenas

Puntarenas is currently facing several challenges that highlight a lack of management by the municipal administration led by Mayor Randall Chavarría.

One of the most prominent issues involves the Lito Pérez stadium. For several months, stadium administrators proposed an agreement to the municipality that would have allowed urgent infrastructure improvements. The agreement aimed to increase capacity, improve safety conditions, and ensure that residents could support their team in a suitable environment. However, there has been no action taken in response.

Another pressing concern is the situation at Puntarenas Central Market, which is under a court order that could result in its closure. This potential closure stems from years of neglect, inadequate maintenance, and delayed decisions. If it happens, merchants and families who rely on this economic activity would be most affected.

The problems are compounded by the fact that Mayor Randall Chavarría has not submitted either an adjusted budget or an extraordinary budget necessary to fund these and other urgent projects for the canton.

The General Comptroller’s Office has provided special training sessions, technical support, and direct guidance to help the municipality correctly prepare and submit these budget documents. Despite having institutional support and resources available, these documents remain unsubmitted.

This lack of management affects not only the center of Puntarenas but also districts such as Cóbano, Lepanto, and Paquera. These areas depend on municipal budgets for essential works and services in their communities.

In total, more than 150,000 people are impacted by delays in planning, execution, and decision-making.

“The public deserves authorities who plan ahead, execute effectively, and deliver results. Governing is not just about holding office; it is about solving community problems and defending people’s interests,” according to a statement from local officials.
