The Ministry of Public Works and Transport announced on Apr. 9 that the new underpass beneath CircunvalaciĂłn, connecting Hatillos 2 and 3 with Hatillos 5 and 6, is expected to be operational before the end of the first half of the year.

The project aims to improve traffic flow in the area. Since January, when lanes over CircunvalaciĂłn were opened and work began on side roads, benefits have already been observed. The construction currently stands at a reported progress of 68%.

According to the Construction Management for Roads and Bridges at the National Road Council, four out of six lanes are now open for uninterrupted travel at this crossing. Only two more lanes above the tunnel remain to be completed along with a transversal passage underneath that will connect these communities.

Work continues on installing anchoring systems for New Jersey-type containment barriers along both sides of national route 39 (CircunvalaciĂłn). Additionally, slot drain systems essential for proper water drainage are being installed. Excavation and subbase placement are ongoing in acceleration and deceleration lanes as part of this infrastructure project.

Efforts also include upgrading stormwater drainage through pipe installation—ranging from 90 cm to 107 cm in diameter—and building wells and catch basins on marginal streets as well as Avenida 36. Retaining walls are also being constructed along Avenida 36 to stabilize adjacent marginal roads.

The Council is investing ¢4.270 million into this interchange. The new tunnel will feature improved sidewalks, pedestrian crossings, enhanced rainwater management systems, and upgraded lighting suited for the updated infrastructure.
