A Russian general died on Monday following a car explosion in southern Moscow, according to the Russian Investigative Committee. The committee announced it has launched an investigation into the “murder” of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov, who served as director of the Operational Training Department of the General Staff.
Authorities said one line of inquiry is focused on possible involvement by Ukrainian special services. An explosive device was reportedly placed under a vehicle and detonated on a street in Moscow. The committee stated that Sarvarov “succumbed to his injuries” from the blast.
Since Russia began its offensive against Ukraine in February 2022, Kyiv has repeatedly been accused of carrying out targeted attacks against high-profile individuals and military leaders within Russia and areas occupied by Moscow in Ukraine.
In December 2024, Igor Kirilov, commander of Russian radiological, chemical, and biological defense forces, died after an electric scooter rigged with explosives detonated in Moscow. That killing was claimed by Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU).
