An armed attack at a soccer field in Salamanca, Guanajuato, Mexico, resulted in 11 deaths and 12 injuries on Sunday, according to local authorities. The incident occurred when armed individuals entered the field during a match and opened fire on those present.
The municipal government stated that ten people died at the scene, while one more succumbed to injuries after being transported to a hospital. “Se confirmó el fallecimiento de 11 personas, de las cuales 10 perdieron la vida en el lugar y una más mientras recibía atención médica en un centro hospitalario,” the municipality said.
Twelve others were injured by gunfire and are receiving medical treatment. Security forces launched an operation to find those responsible for the shooting, but no arrests had been reported as of press time.
Authorities also reported that four bags containing human remains were found Saturday night in Salamanca. This discovery has raised further concern about increasing violence in the area.
Guanajuato is known as an industrial center with automotive assembly plants and tourist attractions. However, it has become one of Mexico’s most violent states due to conflicts between criminal groups over drug trafficking and fuel theft.
Earlier this year, President Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration noted that Mexico’s homicide rate dropped in 2025 to its lowest level in ten years as a result of its security strategy.
