Sporting and Guadalupe FC played to a scoreless draw on March 21 in a match marked by strong defense and high tension. Sporting missed an opportunity to move into the playoff zone and further complicate Guadalupe’s fight against relegation.
The result matters for both teams as Sporting could have climbed into the top four with a win, while Guadalupe was looking to close the gap with San Carlos in the standings. The game featured intense play, with both sides aware of what was at stake.
Sporting had a key chance to take all three points when Giancarlo Pipo González took a penalty, but his shot was saved by Guadalupe goalkeeper Rodiney Leal. The closing minutes saw Goicoechea’s team create several scoring opportunities, but their shots went wide, leaving players visibly frustrated at the final whistle.
Guadalupe, known as “El Equipo de la Rosa,” could have put pressure on San Carlos with a victory, which would have brought them within five points of their rivals with fifteen left to play. Instead, Sporting now has 18 points—the same as Liga Deportiva Alajuelense and Municipal Liberia—though Sporting has one game in hand compared to those teams.
Guadalupe remains at 23 points in the overall standings, seven behind San Carlos, who still have one more match to play. Despite not winning, Sporting managed to keep their ten-point lead over Guadalupe near the bottom of the table, making it less likely they will finish last this season under coach Andrés Carevic.
