The President of the United States, Donald Trump, praised Honduran President Nasry Asfura following a meeting at Mar-a-Lago. Trump had supported Asfura during his campaign for the presidency of Honduras.
Asfura, a conservative businessman and former mayor of Tegucigalpa, was sworn in last week after winning the November election with Trump’s endorsement. During the campaign, Trump had warned that U.S. aid to Honduras could be cut if Asfura lost.
“I had a very important meeting with my friend, and president of Honduras, Nasry ‘Tito’ Asfura,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Once I gave him my strong endorsement, he won his election! Tito and I share many of the same ‘America First’ values. We have a close partnership on security,” he added.
Trump also said they discussed investment and trade between the two countries. The Honduran Presidency released a photo showing both leaders smiling and giving a thumbs-up gesture.
Asfura is expected to address the media about their discussions on Sunday.
On January 12, Asfura met with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. After this meeting, both countries announced plans to pursue a free trade agreement.
Asfura’s victory has given Trump another ally in Latin America as conservative candidates have replaced left-leaning leaders in several countries across the region. Asfura succeeded Xiomara Castro and has indicated he may consider shifting diplomatic relations from China to Taiwan.
