The United Nations highlighted on April 6 the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, emphasizing the essential role that sport plays in promoting human rights and supporting economic and social development since its international recognition in 2013.
This observance underscores how sport can foster connection, inclusion, and peace in a world facing increasing divisions. The General Assembly of the United Nations stated that sport has a unique capacity to bring people together across differences.
The Ministry of Education Public (MEP) in Costa Rica is among those marking this day. Recent initiatives include alliances with organizations such as CENECOOP R.L., which announced the distribution of 90,000 scholarships for training educators nationwide in artificial intelligence applied to education. These efforts aim to prepare teachers, directors, and educational leaders for future challenges.
Other recent educational activities include regional work sessions with teachers to develop scientific skills using remote laboratories provided by Universidad Estatal a Distancia (UNED). In addition, Kevin Araya Céspedes from Liceo Experimental Bilingüe José Figueres Ferrer represented Costa Rica at an international congress organized by IFLA LAC held in Antigua Guatemala on March 5-6.
The Ministry has also worked with the Public Transport Council (CTP) to publish guidelines addressing violence or vulnerability among students using public transportation services. Such measures are intended to ensure safer environments for all students.
These actions reflect ongoing efforts within Costa Rica’s education sector to promote inclusion, safety, innovation, and awareness through both sports and broader educational programs.
