The Ministry of Public Education announced on April 23 the celebration of World Book and Copyright Day, aiming to encourage reading, support the publishing industry, and protect intellectual property through respect for copyright.

This annual event is recognized every April 23. It was proclaimed in 1995 after being proposed by the International Publishers Association and presented by the Spanish government to UNESCO.

In connection with this day, more than 300 students participated in an official event where “Costa Rica Lee,” a national initiative to promote daily reading, was launched. The activity took place in San José. The Ministry also invited the educational community to participate in the twelfth edition of the Costa Rican Mathematics Olympiad for Primary Education (OLCOMEP) scheduled for 2026.

Additionally, night schools in Quepos, Jacó, and La Julieta under the Central Pacific Regional Directorate have implemented since 2025 an educational reintegration project called Rescate. This project aims to help night students complete their academic training through solidarity, communication, and empathy.

The announcement also highlighted other recent commemorations such as International Mother Earth Day on April 22—established by a United Nations General Assembly resolution in 2009—and Costa Rican Indigenous Peoples’ Day on April 19 according to Executive Decree No.1803-C from 1988.

These activities reflect ongoing efforts by education authorities to foster cultural awareness and lifelong learning across various communities.
