The Ministry of Education announced on March 21 a series of commemorations and educational initiatives, including World Down Syndrome Day, the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, and activities related to cultural diversity and innovation in education.
These observances aim to raise public awareness about inclusion, equality, and the value of diversity within communities. The United Nations has designated World Down Syndrome Day since 2011 to highlight the dignity and contributions of people with intellectual disabilities. Similarly, the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination has been observed every March 21 since its proclamation by the United Nations General Assembly in 1966 to promote respect and equality among all people.
Other recent events include a special session of the Government Council at Hacienda Santa Rosa on March 20, which honored historical figures from Costa Rica’s National Campaign of 1856-1857. The session recognized those who fought for their country during this period.
In addition, coordinators from institutions associated with UNESCO’s Associated Schools Network (RedPEA) participated in a national meeting on March 5. They worked together to plan strategic actions for 2026-2029 under the theme “Building peaceful and sustainable futures through transformative education”.
Educational innovation was also highlighted through collaboration between ULACIT University, the Ministry of Education, UNESCO, and the United Nations System in Costa Rica. Together they developed a guide titled “Artificial Intelligence in Class: A Guide for Teachers,” reflecting public-private partnerships aimed at fostering innovation.
March also saw celebrations promoting French language and culture as part of Francophonie Day, an event that dates back to the creation of the International Organization of La Francophonie in 1970. Additionally, STEM Racing Costa Rica reported progress on its initiative encouraging young talent in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), impacting over 14,000 students since its launch in 2023.
